Speckled Tanager

Ixothraupis guttata (Cabanis, 1851)

Speckled Tanager, Ixothraupis guttata, is a passerine of Middle America, breeding from Costa Rica through Panama and on to northern and north-western Brazil. It is a resident bird across that range. Its plumage is marked by green upperparts with black spotting, a yellow face with a black line running from the eye to the gape, and white underparts spotted with black. The wings and tail are black with green edging. The sexes look alike. In Trinidad, the local form shows more yellow on the head and stronger spotting. It lives in humid montane and secondary forest.
