Spotted Pardalote, Pardalotus punctatus, occurs in southern and eastern Australia and belongs to the pardalote family, Pardalotidae. It was described by Shaw in 1792. This passerine is one of the smallest Australian birds, and it is also among the most colourful. It is sometimes called the diamondbird. Three subspecies are recognised. The wet tropics form, militaris, occurs in northeastern Queensland, while xanthopyge is mainly a bird of drier inland southern Australia, especially Mallee woodland. Another record places it nesting in burrows in semi-rainforest inland from the coast in Mid North Coast NSW.
