Steller's Eider

Polysticta stelleri

Steller's Eider is a small sea duck found in the Arctic regions of North America and Asia. The male has striking black and white plumage with a distinctive green patch on the back of the head, while the female is mottled brown. These ducks are highly social and often form large flocks during the non-breeding season. They are known for their diving ability, foraging on mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic invertebrates in coastal waters. Steller's Eiders are facing threats from habitat degradation, oil spills, and climate change, which have led to population declines in some areas.
