Varanger Arctic Bird Photography: Eiders, Seabird Cliffs and Aurora

About this tour

Wintering sea ducks and returning cliff-nesting seabirds are the focus of this eleven-day photography journey around the Varanger Peninsula. Starting and ending in Kirkenes, Wild Photography Holidays links Båtsfjord, Kongsfjord and Vardø, with bird photography set among snowy coastlines, working harbors and traditional wooden buildings. The March 26–April 5, 2027 departure is listed at £4,900 per person, for up to twelve guests.

Båtsfjord provides close perspectives on Arctic sea ducks. Floating hides offer opportunities to photograph King Eider, Steller’s Eider, Long-tailed Duck and Black Guillemot, while a coastal boat outing changes the viewpoint and creates chances for birds in flight. Three nights at Båtsfjord Brygge keep the group beside the harbor, with time devoted to photographic work rather than changing bases each day.

At Kongsfjord, the program broadens to coastal landscape and village photography. Restored wooden houses by the shore, fishing boats and a working harbor give context to life on this northern coast. A cliffside bird hide provides another observation setting. Clear evenings may allow aurora photography, although neither clear skies nor Northern Lights can be guaranteed.

The journey toward Vardø includes Ekkerøy and its kittiwake cliffs. From Vardø’s harbor, boat access reaches Hornøya, where puffins, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes and shags share the seabird colony. Snow around the cliffs can create distinctive backgrounds for birds defending breeding territories. Alongside the birds, the town offers subjects such as old fishing vessels, murals and coastal buildings.

After the Vardø stage, the group returns to Kirkenes with photographic stops as opportunities arise. Ten nights of accommodation, meals and the arrival airport transfer are included. International flights, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks and the departure airport transfer are excluded. Services end after breakfast on day eleven. This is an outdoor itinerary: weather and local conditions can change the order or availability of activities.
