Long-tailed Duck

Clangula hyemalis

The Long-tailed Duck is a medium-sized sea duck with a distinctive long tail, which gives it its name. Breeding males have striking black and white plumage with a pinkish hue on the breast. In winter, both males and females have a more subdued, mottled gray and white appearance. This species is known for its unique vocalizations, including a variety of whistles and quacks. Long-tailed Ducks breed in the Arctic tundra and spend winters in coastal marine habitats. They are adept divers, feeding on a variety of marine invertebrates and small fish. Due to the remote nature of their breeding grounds, Long-tailed Ducks face threats from climate change and oil pollution.
