Swallow Tanager, Tersina viridis, is a tanager of Middle America and South America, ranging from Panama to north-eastern Argentina. It is the only species in the genus Tersina. The male and female look different. The male is turquoise blue with a small black face and upper throat patch, while the female is yellow-green. The species was first described in 1811 by Illiger. It belongs to the family Thraupidae and the order Passeriformes. Three subspecies are recognised, with forms recorded from north Colombia, east Panama through much of northern South America, and south-eastern Brazil to north-eastern Argentina.
