Hirundinidae — Swallows, Martins

Tahiti Swallow, Hirundo tahitica, breeds on Moorea and Tahiti in the Pacific Ocean. It belongs to the swallow family Hirundinidae and was described by Gmelin in 1789. The bird is a small passerine and was once treated as the same species as the Pacific Swallow. It is now recognised as separate on the basis of differences in form. No subspecies are recognised. It is placed in the genus Hirundo.
