Tibetan Sandgrouse

Syrrhaptes tibetanus

The Tibetan Sandgrouse is a medium-sized bird found in the high-altitude steppes and semi-deserts of Central Asia, particularly in Tibet and parts of China. It is known for its striking plumage and distinctive long, pointed wings. These birds are well-adapted to their arid habitats, often traveling long distances to find water sources. They are highly gregarious and form large flocks during the non-breeding season. The Tibetan Sandgrouse primarily feeds on seeds and vegetation, and its cryptic coloration provides effective camouflage against the barren landscapes. Despite facing threats from habitat degradation and hunting, the population status of this species is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.
