About this tour

Tajikistan compresses remarkable habitat change into one overland route. The programme starts with accessible birding around Dushanbe, crosses dry foothills and river valleys, then climbs onto the austere plateaus and mountain deserts of the eastern Pamirs.

The birding objective is equally focused. Tibetan Sandgrouse and Tibetan Snowcock are major high-country priorities, while the Wakhan region provides the specialist search for Large-billed Reed Warbler. White-throated Robin, Rufous-naped Tit, accentors, snowfinches, wheatears and vultures make up a varied supporting cast.

This is a remote journey rather than a conventional hotel circuit. Road days are long, accommodation becomes simple away from the capital, and altitude or terrain can make some walks strenuous. The route rewards preparation with close access to landscapes and birds rarely combined in a short Central Asian itinerary.

Arrival and Dushanbe introduction

Reach Dushanbe and recover from the international journey. Garden birding introduces lower-elevation species before the route turns east.

Day 3
Dushanbe to Baljuvon
Baljuvon

Drive through river and foothill country with selected birding stops. An evening session in the drier hills seeks robins, buntings, rock thrushes, vultures and other slope specialists.

Day 4
Mountain concession walk
Baljuvon

Explore rugged habitat above the river. The walk also offers a chance for Tajik Markhor, while Grey-necked, Red-headed and Rock buntings are among the avian priorities.

Day 5
Panj valley transfer
Kalai Khumb

Return to the vehicles and continue toward Kalai Khumb. Stops break the journey for nuthatches, wheatears, partridges, flycatchers and soaring raptors.

Day 6
Five days in the eastern Pamirs
Eastern Pamirs

Base the central expedition in high mountain desert and the Wakhan region. Daily routes concentrate on Tibetan Sandgrouse, Tibetan Snowcock, Large-billed Reed Warbler and a wider set of alpine birds.

Long return to Dushanbe

Retrace the mountain road with targeted stops for species missed earlier. Flexibility is reserved for the strongest remaining priorities before reaching the capital.

Departure
Dushanbe

Transfer to Dushanbe International Airport at the time required for the confirmed onward flight.
