Torrent Duck

Torrent Duck Merganetta armata is a member of the Anatidae family and the only species in its genus. It breeds in South America from Venezuela south to central Chile and western Argentina, with resident populations in the Andes. It nests in small caves beside water and other sheltered places, and keeps territories on fast mountain rivers, usually above 1,500 metres. It swims and dives strongly in white water, but only flies short distances. The species is declining, with northern populations more affected than those in Chile.
