Torrent Duck

Merganetta armata

The Torrent Duck (Merganetta armata) is a unique species of duck found in the fast-flowing streams and rivers of the Andes mountains in South America. These ducks have evolved specialized features to thrive in their turbulent habitat, including strong webbed feet for navigating rapids and a streamlined body shape. They are known for their striking appearance, with a dark body, contrasting white markings, and a bright red bill. Torrent Ducks are highly adapted to their aquatic lifestyle, feeding on aquatic invertebrates and small fish. Due to their specific habitat requirements, they are vulnerable to habitat degradation and pollution.
