Mellisuga minima
The Vervain Hummingbird (Mellisuga minima) is a tiny species of hummingbird found in the Caribbean. It is the smallest bird species in the world, with adults measuring only 5-6 cm in length and weighing around 2 grams. The male has iridescent green plumage on the upperparts, while the female is slightly duller with a white belly. These birds are known for their remarkable agility and speed, allowing them to hover in mid-air and dart from flower to flower while feeding on nectar. They primarily inhabit tropical and subtropical moist forests, as well as gardens and parks with suitable flowering plants. Despite their small size, Vervain Hummingbirds are capable of long-distance migration, and their conservation status is currently listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
