About this tour
This five-day private route condenses several of the Dominican Republic’s leading endemic-bird sites into a shorter circuit. It opens in Santo Domingo’s National Botanical Gardens, turns west for multiple elevations in Sierra de Bahoruco and Lake Enriquillo, then finishes with the forests near Los Haitises.

Day 1
Capital gardens and the road to Barahona
Start with morning birding in Santo Domingo’s National Botanical Gardens. Continue west toward Sierra de Bahoruco, pausing for lunch, and settle at a seaside hotel near Barahona. If conditions permit, visit a nearby Ashy-faced Owl roost before the overnight.
Day 2
Cachote cloud forest and Rabo de Gato
Use a 4x4 for early access to the cloud forest at Cachote and bird there through the morning. Return toward Barahona for lunch, then continue to Puerto Escondido and spend the afternoon on Rabo de Gato Trail before lodging near Duvergé.
Day 3
Zapoten before dawn and evening return
Depart before daylight by 4x4 for Zapoten, adding night birding on the approach before working its cloud and pine forest into early afternoon. After resting in Duvergé, return to the Puerto Escondido area for another late-afternoon and nighttime session.
Day 4
Charco Azul, Lake Enriquillo and the capital
Bird Loma Charco Azul around Puerto Escondido, then visit Lake Enriquillo National Park with Hispaniolan Palm Crow as a specific objective. Travel back to Santo Domingo for the final night.
Day 5
Los Haitises forest and Santo Domingo return
Drive northeast to the Los Limones area outside Los Haitises National Park. Search the nearby forest for Ridgway’s Hawk and other birds before lunch, then return to Santo Domingo to conclude the five-day circuit.
