White-backed Stilt

Himantopus melanurus

The White-backed Stilt, also known as the White-backed Stilt, is a striking shorebird with long pink legs and a black-and-white body. It is found in coastal and inland wetlands across Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands. This species is known for its distinctive high-stepping walk and is often seen wading in shallow water in search of small invertebrates. The White-backed Stilt is a social bird, often found in large flocks during the non-breeding season. Although not currently considered globally threatened, habitat loss and degradation pose potential threats to this species.
