White-backed Vulture

Gyps africanus

The White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus) is a large, predominantly scavenging bird of prey found in sub-Saharan Africa. It has a white neck ruff and a white back, with dark brown plumage covering the rest of its body. This vulture plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by consuming carrion and helping to prevent the spread of disease. Unfortunately, the species has experienced a significant population decline due to factors such as habitat loss, poisoning, and illegal trade. Efforts are underway to conserve and protect this important species.
