White-crested Laughingthrush Garrulax leucolophus breeds across the Oriental Region, from the Himalayas into Indochina, and belongs to the Leiothrichidae. It is a forest and scrub bird of foothills, usually in dense, moist, shaded cover, and it also uses broadleaved secondary woodland edges and undergrowth. Bamboo is part of its preferred habitat and is used for nesting and concealment. The bird is strongly social and often travels in flocks, where its loud, varied voice carries through the group. Its white hood and raised crest, together with the dark facial mask, make it easy to pick out.
