Wompoo Fruit Dove

Ptilinopus magnificus (Temminck, 1821)

Wompoo Fruit Dove, Ptilinopus magnificus, lives in New Guinea and eastern Australia. It is a fruit dove and one of the larger members of that group. The bird has purple on the neck, breast and upper belly, with yellow on the lower belly and green below. Males and females look alike, while young birds are duller and greener. It can be difficult to spot in the forest canopy, where it tends to remain quiet. Its call is described as sounding like wollack-wa-hoo and as human-like.
