Wood Sandpiper

Tringa glareola

The Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola) is a medium-sized wader found in wetlands and grassy areas across Europe, Asia, and Africa. It has a distinctive white supercilium and a slightly down-curved bill. During the breeding season, it displays a beautiful courtship flight, with the male performing aerial displays. Wood Sandpipers forage by probing their long bills into mud or shallow water to catch insects, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates. They migrate long distances and winter in sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and Southeast Asia. The species is not globally threatened, but habitat loss and degradation in some areas pose localized threats.
