Thraupidae — Tanagers & Allies

Yellow Cardinal, Gubernatrix cristata, is a South American passerine in the tanager family, breeding in Uruguay and north-eastern Argentina. It was first described by Vieillot in 1817 and is the only species placed in Gubernatrix. The bird is also known to hybridise with the diuca finch. Its breeding range lies in dry savanna, temperate grassland, and both temperate and subtropical or tropical shrubland. The species has been studied for variation in vocalisation, and small differences in song have been recorded among four populations.
