Private Half-Day Rio Restinga and Seashore Birding with Ricardo Barbosa
Follow Rio's western shoreline on a private half-day combining protected restinga habitat, coastal scenery and searches for tanagers and crakes.
About this tour
Rio's western coast still holds protected areas of restinga, the native vegetation associated with this sandy shoreline. This private outing follows the coast from 06:30 until around 13:00, pairing a distinct birding habitat with views of the city's famous seaboard.
Brazilian Tanager and Orange-headed Tanager are prominent possibilities, while wet or scrubby sections may also produce Russet-crowned Crake, Rufous-sided Crake and Moustached Wren. These species guide the search without being guaranteed.
The half-day is a useful contrast to Rio's mountain-forest excursions: the emphasis shifts to coastal vegetation and the bird community it supports, while retaining a compact morning schedule. Restinga remains the defining habitat throughout.
