About this tour
This full-day route combines the temple landscapes of Koh Ker and Beng Mealea with birding in deciduous dipterocarp and semi-evergreen forest. Koh Ker became the Khmer capital in the tenth century; its pyramidal temple and quieter outlying sites allow cultural exploration away from Angkor's busiest areas.
The surrounding forest can hold Black-headed and White-bellied woodpeckers, Collared Falconet, White-rumped Pygmy Falcon, Rufous-winged Buzzard, nuthatches, bushlarks and other dry-forest birds. Beng Mealea, sometimes described as a possible architectural precursor to Angkor Wat, can add northern migrants from December to March, including the difficult White-throated Rock Thrush.
Birding is woven through both archaeological settings rather than separated from them. The programme includes guiding, transport from Siem Reap, breakfast, admission and conservation support; seasonal conditions determine the final bird list.
