Explore the birdlife of Southern Finland with Olli Haukkovaara, a Valkeakoski-based guide who has organized nature excursions for both private guests and larger parties over many years. Every outing is shaped around the time of year, fresh field information and the species that matter most to the visiting birder. His regular area spans the country between Tampere and Hämeenlinna; trips farther across Southern Finland may also be possible when his calendar permits.
There is no single best season. In winter, changing food supplies and snow conditions determine whether the focus turns to forest woodpeckers and owls or flocks of Pine Grosbeaks and waxwings. Early March brings the chance to watch Golden Eagles moving through the Valkeakoski area, while White-tailed Eagles can congregate where fish are available on frozen lakes. Later in spring, northern and Arctic migrants pass through and large movements of geese can become the main event.
The long daylight of late May, June and early July opens a different window: outings can be timed for the evening voices of birds that sing at night. As summer gives way to autumn, migration again becomes the central theme and may continue into late October or even November if snow arrives late. Olli uses local conditions to choose the most worthwhile habitat rather than following a fixed route.
These are currently custom outings offered chiefly outside weekday working hours. Travellers may take a scheduled bus into Valkeakoski, while an agreed collection from their accommodation or another meeting place can also be arranged using Olli’s car. Duration, party size, route and fee are settled for each request through BirdWatch. The birds remain wild, so even carefully chosen sites cannot promise a particular encounter.
