Pine Grosbeak

Pinicola enucleator (Linnaeus, 1758)

Pine Grosbeak, Pinicola enucleator, breeds across Scandinavia through Kamchatka, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, as well as Hokkaido, western Alaska, eastern Canada, and high mountain areas of western North America to California and New Mexico. It is a finch in the family Fringillidae and the only species placed in Pinicola. It occurs in coniferous woodland across this range. In some years it moves much farther than usual, travelling long distances when food is scarce and appearing farther south or at lower elevations than normal.
