An eight-day Assam circuit through Manas, Nameri and Kaziranga for threatened grassland birds, lowland forest wildlife and large mammals.
About this tour
This eight-day itinerary visits three major protected areas in Assam. Manas combines grassland and forest along the Bhutan border, Nameri adds lowland forest and the Jia Bhoreli River, and Kaziranga provides extensive wetlands and tall grass beside the Brahmaputra.
Manas National Park forms part of an elephant corridor and continues into Bhutan as Royal Manas. Golden Langur is one of its characteristic mammals, while Bengal Florican is the principal threatened bird target. Swamp Francolin, hornbills, Red-headed Trogon, Silver-breasted Broadbill, Sultan Tit and Black-breasted Parrotbill are among the wider possibilities.
At Nameri, quiet approaches across the river and through forest focus on White-winged Duck. This shy species uses secluded pools and may flush before it can be seen. River birds, hornbills, vultures, raptors and forest passerines broaden the search during the morning before the drive to Kaziranga.
Kaziranga is especially important for Indian Rhinoceros and also supports Wild Water Buffalo and Asian Elephant. Tiger and otters are possible but uncertain. Wetlands and grasslands may produce Greater Adjutant, Pallas’s Fish-Eagle, Swamp Francolin, Bengal Florican, Indian Grassbird and Finn’s Weaver.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive Delhi and on to Guwahati
Day 1 is an arrival and positioning day. A connection to Guwahati and an overnight there is possible when the Delhi flight lands early enough. A later arrival instead requires a Delhi hotel night and the onward flight late the next morning.
Day 2
Guwahati to Manas National Park
Before leaving Guwahati, travelers who slept in the city may visit Deepor Beel, Garbhanga Reserve Forest or the Greater Adjutant site at the refuse grounds. The road journey then reaches Manas for lodge check-in and the first afternoon safari. Below the Himalayan foothills, the river divides a mosaic of forest and grassland that remains protected across the Bhutan boundary. Mammal interest ranges from Golden Langur and Hispid Hare to Pygmy Hog and the rarely encountered Clouded Leopard. The park also holds Western Hoolock Gibbon, Capped Langur, Wild Water Buffalo, Indian Rhinoceros and Asian Elephant.
Day 3
Manas National Park
A full day in Manas includes morning and afternoon jeep safaris. Bengal Florican is the main grassland target; outside the breeding season it often remains concealed, so a view from one of the park towers still requires luck. Other grassland possibilities include Pied Harrier, Swamp Francolin, Finn’s Weaver, Black-breasted Parrotbill and Indian Grassbird. Forest searches cover hornbills, green-pigeons, Red-headed Trogon, broadbills, laughingthrushes, Sultan Tit and Slaty-backed Forktail.
Day 4
Manas to Nameri Nameri National Park
The group drives to Nameri National Park and Tiger Reserve for late-afternoon birding. If time allows, a boat crossing of the Jia Bhoreli River leads towards swampy pools for White-winged Duck. Nameri is an important Indian site for this endangered species, but the ducks are shy and may retreat or fly before a quiet approach succeeds.
Day 5
Nameri to Kaziranga National Park
A further morning in Nameri’s lowland forest may produce White-cheeked Partridge, Pin-tailed Green-Pigeon, river waders, Ibisbill, raptors, vultures, hornbills, Sultan Tit and Siberian Rubythroat. The group then makes the relatively short transfer to Kaziranga for a two-day stay.
Day 6
Kaziranga National Park
Two days are allocated to Kaziranga, a reserve of roughly 480 square kilometres bounded by the Brahmaputra to the north and the Karbi Hills to the south. Tall elephant grass and jheels form the core landscape. Indian Rhinoceros is the flagship species, accompanied by Wild Water Buffalo and Asian Elephant. The central range often gives strong large-mammal viewing, whereas the eastern side offers different habitats, possible otters and a lucky chance of Tiger. At Sohola Bheel, searches cover pelicans, adjutants, fish-eagles and other waterbirds. Elsewhere the birding may add Bengal Florican, Swamp Francolin, storks, hornbills, Blue-naped Pitta and Finn’s Weaver.
Day 8
Kaziranga to Guwahati and Delhi
The tour ends with the drive from Kaziranga to Guwahati and an onward flight to Delhi. Travelers may instead connect this circuit with another Northeast India tour.
