About this tour

This six-day route combines an urban savanna park, a seasonal freshwater swamp, montane forest and two Rift Valley lakes. It begins in Nairobi National Park before moving through Manguo and Gatamaiyu; the final stages visit Elementeita and spend two days around Baringo.

The habitat sequence supports a wide range of birds: savanna species and raptors in Nairobi, Maccoa Duck and migrant waterfowl at Manguo, Afro-tropical highland birds in Gatamaiyu, flamingos and Palearctic migrants at Elementeita, then waterbirds, owls and dry-country specialties around Baringo.

Walking is the main birding format except in Nairobi National Park, where vehicle rules apply, and Lake Baringo includes a boat ride. Conditions range from cool highlands to the hot Baringo basin, so early starts are used frequently. Every species total and target remains dependent on season, weather and access.

Itinerary

Day 1
NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK

Start early in Nairobi National Park, birding savanna, woodland and wetland areas by vehicle with stops only where permitted. Search for ostriches, bustards, raptors, sandgrouse and other park birds while also watching for large mammals.

Day 2
GATAMAIYU FOREST/MANGUO SWAMP

Bird Manguo Swamp early for Maccoa Duck and resident or migrant waterfowl, then continue to Gatamaiyu Forest. Walk the montane ridges and valleys for Afro-tropical highland species, adapting time at each site to water level and bird activity.

Day 3
LAKE ELEMENTEITA

Walk the Lake Elementeita shoreline for waterbirds and terrestrial species. Focus on flamingos, migrant birds and nearby woodland habitat, including the possibility of Grey-crested Helmetshrike, with the route adjusted to lake level and access.

Day 4
LAKE BARINGO

Continue to Lake Baringo and begin birding the lake and surrounding dry country. Use accessible shoreline and nearby habitat for waterbirds and regional specialties, allowing for heat and travel time.

Day 5
LAKE BARINGO

Use the cooler early morning and late afternoon around Baringo’s cliffs and dry-country habitat. Search for local owls, Three-banded Courser, Chestnut-crowned Sparrow-Weaver, Somali Fiscal and other area specialties.

Day 6
LAKE BARINGO- NAIROBI

Take an early Lake Baringo boat trip for herons, bitterns, kingfishers and other waterbirds, then drive back to Nairobi. If time and arrangements permit, the existing route allows a local primary-school tree-planting visit before the five-to-six-hour return drive.
