About this tour
Arabuko-Sokoke protects about 420 square kilometers of coastal forest and is the largest surviving fragment of a once much broader East African coastal forest system. Its trails provide access to an unusually diverse bird community and a high concentration of localized species.
Three contrasting forest types shape the search. Mixed forest grows on grey sand in the east, Brachystegia woodland crosses the central white-sand zone, and Cynometra forest and thicket occupy the red Magarini sands in the west. Seasonal ponds mark parts of the transition. Arabuko-Sokoke Scops Owl and East Coast Akalat are among the sought-after birds associated with the denser western habitat.
The reserve also supports distinctive coastal wildlife, including Golden-rumped Elephant Shrew, Ader’s Duiker and Sokoke Bushy-tailed Mongoose, as well as endemic butterflies, unusual reptiles and amphibians. The day is paced around current bird activity and trail conditions; all bird and wildlife sightings remain possible rather than guaranteed.
