About this tour

Lake Elementeita is an alkaline soda lake of about 18 square kilometers near Lake Nakuru, with part of the site lying inside Soysambu Conservancy. Its name comes from the Maasai word “muteita,” or “dust place,” reflecting the dry, dusty conditions often experienced from January to March.

The lake has held Ramsar wetland status since 2005 and belongs to the Kenya Lake System UNESCO World Heritage property with Lakes Nakuru and Bogoria. More than 400 bird species have been recorded, including over 100 Palearctic migrant species in winter. Greater and Lesser Flamingos feed on aquatic organisms, while Grey-crested Helmetshrike may be found in surrounding woodland.

Birding is conducted on foot at a relaxed, flexible pace, allowing time for photography and closer study where access permits. Water reaches the lake from Kikopey hot springs as well as the Kariandusi and Meroronyi streams, amid rocky faults and volcanic landforms. Bird totals, flamingo numbers and all individual sightings vary with season, water level and weather.
