About this tour
Meru National Park covers about 870 square kilometers across the equator on Mount Kenya’s eastern side. Fourteen permanent rivers and numerous mountain-fed streams cross the park, creating a sequence of open savanna, riverine forest, swamp, wooded grassland and acacia habitat.
More than 300 bird species have been recorded. Clear streams and wet areas support river and wetland birds, while increasingly dry country toward the Tana River brings Commiphora thicket, thorn scrub and baobabs into the mix. The diversity allows the guide to vary the route around recent activity, water conditions and road access.
Meru connects eastward with Bisanadi National Reserve, while North Kitui and Kora protected areas lie across the Tana to the south. The park can be birded year-round, often with cool mornings and pleasant daytime conditions. Species totals and every individual sighting remain possibilities rather than guarantees.
