Phulchowki Forest Birding Day with Nepal Birding Guide
1/1

About this tour

Follow the forested slopes above Godawari on a one-day birdwatching excursion from Kathmandu. Phulchowki's changing elevation brings together subtropical and temperate woodland, giving the outing a succession of habitats rather than a single observation point. Oak, rhododendron, pine and mixed broadleaf vegetation are central to the day's birding.

The program starts with an early drive from Kathmandu to Godawari, then continues toward Phulchowki Hill. A local guide leads the search through the forest, helping identify birds and locate activity along the route. Lunch breaks up the day before further observation and the late-afternoon return to Kathmandu. On clear days, the landscape also opens to views across the valley and toward the Himalayas.

Chestnut-headed Tesia, Scarlet Finch and Himalayan Cutia, alongside Fire-tailed Sunbird and Rufous-bellied Niltava are among the operator's suggested searches. Laughingthrushes, yuhinas, woodpeckers and other flycatchers broaden the forest birding. The source also lists Spiny Babbler and a spring search for Satyr Tragopan; these remain possible encounters, never promised sightings. Season and conditions determine what is active on the day.

This is a full-day forest outing for beginners as well as experienced birders, with a guide who can assist both observation and photography. The private vehicle, driver and fuel, English-speaking guiding, lunch, drinking water, bird checklist, government taxes and first-aid kit are included. Lunch may be packed or a hot Nepali meal. Bring binoculars, walking shoes and clothing suited to hill weather. October through May is the advertised window, with spring and autumn particularly recommended; the group can contain up to ten guests.
