Explore New Zealand’s three main island groups on a 21-day small-group route from Auckland to Christchurch, with endemic birding and several pelagic opportunities.
About this tour
The 21-day itinerary offers broader geographic coverage than the shorter national tour, travelling from Auckland through the North, South and Stewart Islands before finishing in Christchurch. Extra time allows the route to extend north toward Kerikeri and to include the South Island’s West Coast, glacier country and Eglinton Valley.
Core birding areas can include Tiritiri Matangi, Miranda, Pureora Forest, Manawatu Estuary, Kaikoura and Central Otago. Several offshore outings are built into the wider journey: Marsden Cove, the inner Hauraki Gulf, Kaikoura and a full day from Stewart Island are identified possibilities, while inter-island ferries add further chances to watch seabirds in transit.
The tour seeks representatives of all six endemic New Zealand bird families, supported by focused searches for Wrybill, New Zealand Pigeon, Yellowhead and other regional specialties. The stated pace is low impact, but participants should be able to walk for at least an hour on uneven or undulating terrain without significant help. Tours generally run between October and March. Availability, exact sequencing, transport, accommodation and every commercial term are supplied with the final proposal rather than published as fixed promises.

Itinerary
Day 1
Auckland, Kerikeri and the north
Start in Auckland and use the longer itinerary to reach birding sites around Kerikeri before turning south. Selected reserves, islands and coastal habitats provide the first encounters with endemic forest birds and shorebirds.
Day 7
Central North Island forests and estuaries
Combine mature native forest around Pureora with shorebird and wetland habitat at places such as Miranda and Manawatu Estuary. Site order remains flexible for access and recent bird activity.
Day 12
Kaikoura, West Coast and glacier country
Cross to the South Island for Kaikoura’s coastal and seabird opportunities, then continue through the West Coast and glacier region. The sequence balances offshore birding with forest and open-country stops.
Day 17
Eglinton Valley and Stewart Island
Explore southern habitats including Eglinton Valley before crossing to Stewart Island. Forest searches are paired with a full-day pelagic opportunity when weather and sea state allow.
Day 21
Final birding and Christchurch
Return from the far south and use the remaining route for selected birding stops before the tour concludes in Christchurch. The final sequence is confirmed for each departure.
