About this tour
Stewart Island supports one of New Zealand’s most rewarding full-day pelagic settings. The usual route follows parts of the main coast and the Muttonbird Islands before moving offshore, where several hours may be spent chumming near Wreck Reef or another productive location chosen for the conditions.
Large concentrations of albatrosses are the signature possibility, sometimes numbering in the hundreds when circumstances align. The offshore search can also produce storm petrels, Mottled Petrel and Broad-billed Prion, while coastal observation contributes a different set of seabirds during the outward and return passages.
Wind, swell and visibility determine how far the boat can travel and where observation time is concentrated. The leaders may select a more sheltered chumming site or spend longer with coastal species if the planned offshore route is unsuitable. Boat capacity varies with the vessel used, with a usual maximum between 17 and 20 participants. Stewart Island coast, Muttonbird Islands and offshore water
Follow the Stewart Island coast and pass through the Muttonbird Islands before heading toward productive offshore water. When conditions allow, spend extended time chumming near Wreck Reef or a suitable alternative selected by the leaders. A sheltered route may replace the offshore plan when wind or sea state requires it.
