Abra Malaga Birdwatching - Full Day
A demanding full day across Abra Malaga’s eastern cloud forest and western Polylepis woodland. Starting from Ollantaytambo, the route uses bamboo patches, roadside stops and a high-altitude trek to search for localized Cusco birds on both slopes.
About this tour
Cover two contrasting Abra Malaga ecosystems in one long birding day. The eastern side brings cloud forest and bamboo near San Luis, while the western side adds high Polylepis woodland below the pass.
The field plan combines a very early road journey, targeted vehicle stops and a downhill-and-return trek at altitude. Inca Wren, Marcapata Spinetail, Parodi's Hemispingus, Cuzco Brushfinch and Unstreaked Tit-Tyrant are eastern-slope priorities; Royal Cinclodes and White-tufted Sunbeam are among the western-slope possibilities.
This active itinerary is best suited to guests comfortable with a long day and steep trail sections. Bird activity, mountain weather and available time determine the final mix of stops and sightings.

Itinerary
Day 1
Abra Malaga East and West Slopes
Leave the Ollantaytambo hotel early and follow the road across Abra Malaga toward San Luis on the eastern slope, reached after roughly three hours. Search the bamboo for Unstreaked Tit-Tyrant, Inca Wren and Marcapata Spinetail, as well as Parodi's Hemispingus and Cuzco Brushfinch. Return the 38 km toward the pass with selected birding stops, then walk downhill into Polylepis woodland for Royal Cinclodes, White-tufted Sunbeam and other high-Andean species. Eat the box lunch in the woodland and climb back slowly, continuing to look for missed birds. The field day ends at about 4:00 pm, followed by transfer to the Ollantaytambo hotel or onward to Cusco, where arrival is expected around 7:00 pm.
