About this tour
From the eastern or central Algarve, this full-day tour reaches the Alentejo birding area in about an hour. The route joins two contrasting landscapes: the broad Castro Verde plains and the more varied valleys, hills and escarpments of the Guadiana Valley Natural Park. Castro Verde’s protected cereal and grassland system is one of Portugal’s key areas for steppe-bird conservation.
Great and Little Bustards lead the open-country search. Depending on season, the plains may also hold Lesser Kestrel, European Roller, Common Crane, Calandra Lark, Black-bellied Sandgrouse or Eurasian Stone-curlew. In the Guadiana sector, attention shifts toward Black Stork and White-rumped Swift, as well as vultures and large eagles. Iberian Imperial, Golden and Bonelli’s Eagles are among the possibilities associated with this wider region.
The circuit can also pass Holm Oak woodland, olive groves, reservoirs, stream valleys and the area around Mértola. These habitats make the day more varied than a purely open-country drive. The tour is offered only as a full day because of the distance and number of useful sites; the guide chooses the sequence according to season and recent activity.
