Short-break Birds and Conservation Programme in Southern Portugal
A five-day small-group birding and conservation programme linking Tagus Estuary fieldwork with Guadiana Valley and Castro Verde monitoring activities.
About this tour
This five-day programme combines southern Portugal birding with scheduled conservation work in two protected landscapes. It begins in the Tagus Estuary around Alcochete, where salt pans, rice fields, mudflats, marshes and pasture provide the setting for wetland birds and Mediterranean specialties.
The conservation component includes monitoring Collared Pratincole nests with Tagus Estuary reserve staff before the route moves to Mértola. In the Guadiana Valley and Castro Verde area, field sessions cover rocky river country and open steppe. The published programme also schedules chick-ringing work for Montagu’s Harrier and Lesser Kestrel alongside park staff. These activities are inherently tied to the breeding calendar, permissions, bird welfare and current field conditions; participation should therefore be understood as scheduled conservation work rather than a guaranteed handling encounter.
The journey returns to Lisbon through additional Castro Verde and Tagus habitats, including Cork Oak woodland at Pancas. Bird possibilities range from flamingos, spoonbills and pratincoles to bustards, Black Stork, vultures and eagles. Group size is limited to seven participants.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival and Tagus Estuary
Transfer from Lisbon to Alcochete and begin birding around Hortas, Atalaia, Ribeira das Enguias, Samouco and Barroca d’Alva. Tidal wetlands, salt pans, rice fields and pasture provide the first field setting.
Day 2
Tagus monitoring and transfer to Mértola
Join reserve staff for scheduled Collared Pratincole nest monitoring, then continue through Ponta da Erva’s wetland habitats and a Tagus heronry. Travel to Mértola for the Alentejo stage; all conservation work remains subject to the breeding calendar and authorization.
Day 3
Guadiana Valley
Explore Alcaria Ruiva, Mina de São Domingos and sites near Mértola within the Guadiana Valley Natural Park. Birding focuses on river bluffs, hills and Mediterranean habitats.
Day 4
Raptor monitoring and Castro Verde
Take part in scheduled chick-ringing work for Montagu’s Harrier and Lesser Kestrel alongside park staff, then bird the Castro Verde plains. The activity depends on breeding status, permits and welfare conditions.
Day 5
Castro Verde, Pancas and return
Travel back toward Lisbon with further stops in Castro Verde and the Tagus Estuary, including Cork Oak woodland at Pancas. The programme ends with the Lisbon transfer.
