Short-break Birdwatching Programme in Southern Portugal
A five-day small-group route from Lisbon through the Tagus Estuary, Castro Verde and Guadiana Valley, returning via the Sado Estuary wetlands.
About this tour
This five-day short break links Lisbon’s estuarine wetlands with the open plains and river valleys of the Alentejo. The first two days explore the Tagus Estuary around Alcochete, Ponta da Erva and Pancas, where mudflats, salt marshes, salt pans, rice fields, reedbeds, lagoons and Cork Oak woodland support a broad mix of aquatic and Mediterranean birds.
The route then moves to Mértola. Castro Verde’s cereal fields, pastures and rolling plains provide the setting for bustards, sandgrouse, kestrels, harriers and larks, while the Guadiana Valley adds rocky bluffs and hills used by Black Stork, vultures, eagles and other cliff birds. The return to Lisbon revisits Castro Verde before crossing the Sado Estuary at Comporta and Carrasqueira.
The programme starts and ends in Lisbon and is limited to seven participants. Five days allow a focused sample of the region rather than an exhaustive list of sites. Species mentioned for the wider landscapes remain seasonal possibilities, and the exact field emphasis can change with tides, weather and recent activity.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival and Tagus Estuary
Transfer from Lisbon to Alcochete and begin among the Tagus Estuary’s tidal flats, salt marshes, salt pans, rice fields and pasture around Hortas, Atalaia, Ribeira das Enguias, Samouco and Barroca d’Alva.
Day 2
Ponta da Erva and Pancas
Explore Ponta da Erva’s fields, reedbeds, lagoons and tidal edge, then continue to Cork Oak woodland at Pancas. A breeding-season heronry may be part of the day.
Day 3
Castro Verde plains
Travel into the Alentejo and bird the rolling plains around Castro Verde before overnighting in Mértola. The open landscape is the main focus for steppe birds and raptors.
Day 4
Guadiana Valley
Visit Alcaria Ruiva, Mina de São Domingos and sites near Mértola within the Guadiana Valley Natural Park. Rocky hills, bluffs and river habitats broaden the search to vultures, eagles and other cliff-associated species.
Day 5
Castro Verde, Sado and return
Return toward Lisbon with further birding on the Castro Verde plains and stops around Comporta and Carrasqueira in the Sado Estuary. The programme concludes with the Lisbon transfer.
