Week-long Bird Photography Programme in Southern Portugal
An eight-day bird-photography journey from Lisbon through the Tagus and Sado estuaries, Castro Verde, Guadiana Valley and the Algarve wetlands.
About this tour
This eight-day photography programme follows a broad southern Portugal circuit, beginning in the Tagus Estuary and ending via the Sado. Tidal mudflats, salt pans, rice fields, lagoons, reedbeds and Cork Oak woodland provide varied settings for waterbirds and Mediterranean species before the route turns inland.
Castro Verde and the Guadiana Valley add open steppe, farmland, rocky hills and river bluffs. These landscapes create opportunities for bustards, sandgrouse, kestrels, harriers, vultures and large eagles, although light, distance and wildlife behavior determine what can be photographed. The Algarve stage covers Castro Marim, Tavira, Olhão, Quinta do Lago, Ludo and Salgados Lagoon, returning the focus to coastal wetlands, dunes and pine woodland.
The published programme starts in Lisbon but may be adapted to start or finish in Faro. It includes seven nights and an eight-day route; meals are not part of the listed base package. Photography remains opportunistic rather than a promise of close range, and the daily emphasis can change with tides, weather and current bird activity.
