Week-long Birdwatching Programme in Southern Portugal
An eight-day small-group birding circuit from Lisbon through the Tagus and Sado estuaries, Alentejo steppe, Guadiana Valley and Algarve wetlands.
About this tour
This eight-day route connects southern Portugal’s principal birding landscapes in a compact circuit from Lisbon. It begins among the tidal flats, salt pans, rice fields, lagoons and Cork Oak woodland of the Tagus Estuary, then moves inland to the open plains around Castro Verde and the rocky valleys and bluffs of the Guadiana Valley Natural Park.
The second half turns south to the Algarve. Castro Marim and Ria Formosa add channels, saline flats, dunes, reedbeds, coastal lagoons and pine woodland before the return journey includes wetland birding on the Sado Estuary. This habitat range supports waterbirds, steppe specialists, raptors and Mediterranean woodland species. Greater Flamingo, Eurasian Spoonbill, Great and Little Bustards, Black Stork, vultures, eagles, European Bee-eater and Iberian Magpie illustrate the possibilities, with the realistic mix changing by season.
The programme starts and finishes in Lisbon and is designed for a small group of no more than seven participants. The daily sequence follows the published route, while individual stops and sightings remain subject to local conditions.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival and the Tagus Estuary
Meet in Lisbon and continue to Alcochete for the first birding session in the Tagus Estuary. Tidal flats, salt marshes, salt pans, rice fields and pasture are sampled around Hortas, Atalaia, Ribeira das Enguias, Samouco and Barroca d’Alva, followed by an overnight in Alcochete.
Day 2
Ponta da Erva and Pancas
Explore another part of the Tagus system, combining the open fields, rice plots, reedbeds, lagoons and tidal habitats of Ponta da Erva with Cork Oak woodland at Pancas. A Tagus heronry may be included during the breeding season.
Day 3
Castro Verde plains
Travel into the Alentejo and work the rolling open country around Castro Verde for steppe birds and raptors. The day ends in Mértola, the base for the next stage of the circuit.
Day 4
Guadiana Valley Natural Park
Bird the rocky Guadiana landscape at Alcaria Ruiva, Mina de São Domingos and sites near Mértola. Escarpments, hills and river valleys broaden the search from open-country species to vultures, eagles and cliff-associated birds.
Day 5
Castro Verde and Guadiana
Return to selected sites across the Castro Verde plains and Guadiana Valley. The exact balance between steppe, woodland, river and bluff habitats is chosen for season and recent activity.
Day 6
Castro Marim and Tavira
Head south to Tavira, stopping in the channels, saline flats and salt pans of Castro Marim Natural Reserve and the Tavira sector of Ria Formosa. Overnight in the Tavira area.
Day 7
Ria Formosa and Salgados
Continue through Ria Formosa at Olhão, Quinta do Lago and Ludo, covering dunes, open water, tidal flats, marsh, reedbeds, lagoons and pine woodland. The route also visits Salgados Lagoon before a second Algarve overnight.
Day 8
Sado Estuary and return to Lisbon
Travel back toward Lisbon with birding around the Sado Estuary at Comporta and Carrasqueira. Mudflats, salt marshes and rice fields provide the final wetland session before the Lisbon transfer.
