About this tour
Peneda-Gerês National Park offers a markedly different birding day from the coastal wetlands near Porto. Rugged mountains, a sparse population and harsh winters have preserved extensive wild landscapes. The park holds oak and pine forest, riparian woodland, mountain scrub, pasture, lakes, rivers, streams and peat bogs.
Several breeding birds reach the southwestern edge of their European range here. These include Hen Harrier, Whinchat and Red-backed Shrike, along with Common Snipe, Stock Dove and Yellowhammer. The park also provides important habitat for Ortolan Bunting, Tree Pipit, Garden Warbler, Red Crossbill and Eurasian Bullfinch. Overhead searches can produce Booted Eagle or European Honey Buzzard, while Griffon Vulture and Short-toed Snake Eagle are further raptor possibilities.
The route is planned as a minimum full day because of the distance from Porto and the spread of habitats. Walking and viewpoints are selected for weather, season and the group’s interests. Mammals such as Roe Deer and the park’s free-ranging Garrano horses may also be encountered, but the day remains centered on birding and no wildlife sighting is assured.
