About this tour

Cross Senegal from the Atlantic coast to the wooded savannah and river country of the south-east on a private 14-day birding journey with Abdoulie Jallow. Early coastal birding around Popenguine, Bandia and Somone gives way to the long journey through Wassadou and the Gambia River corridor.

Niokolo-Koba National Park, Dianoudiala, Gamon, Kedougou and Dindefelo bring together riparian forest, open woodland, farmland, seasonal pools and the foothills near the Guinea border. The varied habitats support possibilities ranging from Egyptian Plover and African Finfoot to Senegal Lapwing, Fox Kestrel, Mali Firefinch, raptors, finches, larks and woodland birds.

The return west passes through Tambacounda to the Kaolack salt pans, where tidal mud, shallow water and open pans can hold flamingos, pelicans and a broad selection of Palearctic waders. The final Saloum section combines Toubacouta, Kasumar Island and Palmarin, with a low-tide creek boat trip and opportunities for kite and kestrel roosts, herons, wetland birds and dry-country specialities.

The itinerary order can respond to road conditions, tides and current bird activity. All named species are possibilities rather than guaranteed sightings.
