Egyptian Plover

Pluvianus aegyptius (Linnaeus, 1758)

Egyptian Plover, Pluvianus aegyptius, breeds across a broad belt of Africa from Senegal and Gambia east to Ethiopia, with its range extending south to far northern Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan. It is the only member of the family Pluvianidae. Although its name links it with Egypt, it no longer breeds there, having once also occurred along the Nile in Egypt. The bird was described by Linnaeus in 1758. It is also called the crocodile bird.
