About this tour
La Janda was once Europe’s largest inland wetland before much of it was drained for rice and cereal cultivation. Even after that transformation, flooded fields, channels and open farmland can still concentrate large numbers of birds and several scarce species.
Black Stork and Spanish Imperial Eagle are major possibilities, alongside Black-winged Kite and Bonelli’s Eagle; cranes, ducks and waders use wetter areas. Channels may hold Purple Swamphen, Great Reed Warbler and Reed Bunting, while tamarisks can support spring nesting groups of Cattle Egret, Night Heron, Glossy Ibis and Squacco Heron.
The route follows rural tracks and water channels, scanning both fields and sky. Seasonal flooding strongly influences where birds gather and which sections deserve the most time.
