21-Day Ultimate Southern Tanzania Birding Tour
A 21-day route through Tanzania’s southern highlands, miombo woodland, Kilombero floodplain, Eastern Arc forests, Nyerere and the Pugu Hills.
About this tour
This long-form southern Tanzania journey links mountain forests, high-altitude grassland, farm country, miombo woodland, floodplain and coastal forest. Beginning around Rungwe and the Poroto Mountains, the route moves through Kitulo, Mufindi and Kisolanza before opening into the larger landscapes of Ruaha and Mikumi.
The middle section combines national-park birding with the Kilosa Road woodlands and the Kilombero floodplain. Mountain stages follow in the eastern Udzungwas, the Bunduki and Bondwa sections of the Ulugurus, and the Ukaguru range. Several of these days involve substantial hiking and are intended for birders prepared for active fieldwork.
Nyerere National Park provides two full days for a broader mix of birds and wildlife before the final drive toward Dar es Salaam. The journey closes at Pugu Hills, where coastal forest birding is fitted around lunch and the onward airport transfer. Accommodation changes with the route and may include farm stays, park bandas, camps and lodges; exact properties are confirmed with the departure plan. Bird sightings and access always depend on season and current conditions.
