8-Day Western Turkey Birding, Flowers and Ancient Sites
Combine Aegean wetland birding, spring flowers and ancient sites on an eight-day route through Dilek, Lake Bafa, the Menderes Delta and Mount Honaz.
About this tour
This eight-day journey combines birding with botany and archaeology along Turkey’s Aegean coast and inland around Denizli. It starts and finishes at Izmir, using Kusadasi, Lake Bafa and Denizli as bases. The route brings together coastal scrub, reedbeds, saline and freshwater lakes, pine woodland and mountain vegetation, with April identified as the preferred month.
Birding begins around Izmir before the first nights in Kusadasi. Dilek National Park pairs rocky terrain and wooded slopes with opportunities for warblers, nuthatches and soaring raptors. A visit to Ephesus adds archaeology to the day, including its terrace houses and a look at nearby wetland habitat. The next stage moves toward Lake Bafa through the fishponds and wetlands around Karina, with Priene visited along the way.
Two nights at Pinarcik allow a more sustained look at Lake Bafa and the Menderes Delta. Pelicans, herons, ducks and waders are possibilities on the water, while dry country nearby offers shrikes and warblers. Brief visits to ancient sites, including Heraklea, complement the field observations without replacing the daily natural-history focus.
Around Denizli, Pamukkale and Hierapolis are combined with time to watch birds in the surrounding hills. Lake Acigol and Isikli Golu offer a contrast between saline water and freshwater reedbeds. A final mountain outing follows changing vegetation on Mount Honaz before returning to Kusadasi. The programme includes seven hotel nights, an English-speaking leader and the listed meals and private-vehicle transfers. Bird sightings and the state of seasonal flowers vary; no individual species is guaranteed.
Dinner service at the accommodation is normally available until 20:30–21:00. Lunches are packed or taken at local restaurants where available.

Itinerary
Day 1
Izmir arrival and first birds
Meet the tour representative at Izmir airport, then begin watching for birds around the city and its pine-covered hills. Continue south to Kusadasi for the first overnight stay. Overnight: Kusadasi hotel stay. Meals: dinner.
Day 2
Dilek habitats and Ephesus
Explore Dilek's rocky slopes, scrub and pine woodland, watching for warblers, rock nuthatches and raptors. After lunch visit Ephesus and its terrace houses, with a nearby wetland stop before returning to Kusadasi. Overnight: Kusadasi hotel stay. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 3
Karina wetlands, Priene and Lake Bafa
Travel toward Lake Bafa, inspecting Karina's fishponds and muddy margins for herons, egrets and waders. Continue through the Miletos pond area and visit Priene before the overnight stop at Pinarcik. Overnight: Pinarcik village (Lake Bafa) hotel stay. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 4
Menderes Delta and Bafa shores
Spend another day exploring the lake and delta, with pelicans, ducks, herons and terns among the possibilities. Watch nearby dry habitats for shrikes and warblers, adding a brief visit to Heraklea before returning to Pinarcik. Overnight: Pinarcik village (Lake Bafa) hotel stay. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 5
Pamukkale, Hierapolis and Denizli
Follow the river valley inland toward Denizli and visit the terraces of Pamukkale and the ancient site of Hierapolis. The surrounding scrub and rocky hills provide opportunities for wheatears, buntings and soaring raptors. Overnight: Denizli hotel stay. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 6
Saline and freshwater lake birding
Compare Lake Acigol's saline environment with freshwater Isikli Golu and its reedbeds. Search the lakeshores, springs and surrounding scrub for waterbirds and passerines before returning to Denizli. Overnight: Denizli hotel stay. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 7
Mount Honaz to Kusadasi
Follow the changing vegetation on Mount Honaz from pine woodland toward more open high ground. After lunch, travel back to Kusadasi with birding breaks where timing allows. Overnight: Kusadasi hotel stay. Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 8
Departure from Izmir
Have breakfast before the transfer from Kusadasi to Izmir airport. This journey concludes the eight-day circuit. Meals: breakfast.
