Trace western Uganda’s major birding habitats on a private 14-day route linking lowland rainforest, Albertine Rift forest, open savanna, wetlands and acacia country. The journey begins in Entebbe and continues through Semuliki and Kibale before reaching Queen Elizabeth National Park, both the Buhoma and Ruhija sectors of Bwindi, and Lake Mburo.
Birding is the central thread, with full field days on Semuliki’s Kirumia Trail, in Kibale and Bigodi, across Bwindi’s forest sectors, and around Lake Mburo. The route also includes scheduled chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, mountain-gorilla tracking in Bwindi, a Kazinga Channel boat trip and wildlife viewing in Queen Elizabeth National Park. These activities broaden the experience without replacing its birding focus.
Possible specialties vary by habitat and conditions. The official program highlights Green-breasted Pitta in Kibale, Short-tailed Warbler and African Green Broadbill in Bwindi, waterbirds along the Kazinga Channel, and African Finfoot at Lake Mburo. All birds are wild, so the itinerary describes search priorities rather than guaranteed sightings.

Itinerary ▼
Arrive at Entebbe International Airport and transfer to the hotel. A morning arrival may allow an introductory birding session in Entebbe Botanical Gardens.
Drive west from Entebbe or Kampala to Semuliki National Park, the Ugandan extension of the Ituri Forest on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Bird the Kirumia Trail in Semuliki during the morning, then continue to Kibale National Park for the night.
Spend the morning birding in Kibale Forest with Green-breasted Pitta among the possible specialties, then explore the wetland and forest-edge habitats at Bigodi Swamp.
Join the scheduled chimpanzee-tracking activity in Kibale National Park. After lunch, time permitting, continue birding in Kibale Forest or Bigodi Swamp.
Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park and begin savanna birding and wildlife observation after arrival. An optional night drive may be available locally.
Bird the savanna plains during an early game drive, then take an afternoon boat trip on the Kazinga Channel for waterbirds and other wildlife.
Travel south through the Ishasha plains to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, birding where conditions and timing allow.
Spend a full day in Bwindi’s Buhoma sector, concentrating on Albertine Rift forest birds and possible specialties such as Short-tailed Warbler.
Join the scheduled mountain-gorilla tracking activity after the required park briefing. The remainder of the day is left for rest after the forest trek.
Bird through the forest corridor known as the Neck while transferring from Buhoma to the Ruhija sector of Bwindi.
Undertake a full birding day toward Mubwindi Swamp, a key area for possible African Green Broadbill and other Albertine Rift species.
Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park and use the late afternoon for birding in savanna and acacia-thicket habitats.
Take an early boat trip on Lake Mburo, where African Finfoot is among the possible highlights, then return toward Entebbe Airport or an Entebbe overnight.
