2-Day Minnesota Loon Photography Workshop
A small-group 2-day Common Loon bird photography workshop in Minnesota, with pontoon-boat sessions and instruction from Stan Tekiela.
About this tour
Photograph Common Loons from a pontoon boat on a two-day Minnesota workshop led by Stan Tekiela. With only four participants, the group has space for individual instruction and different shooting positions. The boat provides chairs, while padded floor areas and beanbags support photographers who prefer a lower viewpoint. An optional camera float can bring the lens close to water level.
Three boat sessions are spread across the two-day workshop. Each lasts around three to three-and-a-half hours, with the sequence adapted to weather and bird activity. Flying, landing, preening and family behavior can offer photographic opportunities; chicks may be present in June, but wildlife encounters remain unpredictable.
Stan helps with exposure settings, composition, light and backgrounds while drawing on his experience of loon behavior. A gimbal head can be useful, and photographers must be able to handle their own equipment and work from a moving boat. The workshop is non-smoking.
The fee is USD 1,750 per person, with a USD 825 nonrefundable deposit and an optional USD 400 single-room supplement. The remaining balance is due 60 days before the workshop and is nonrefundable. Arrive after 3 pm on the day preceding the departure. Travel to Minnesota, airfare, baggage charges, gratuities and travel insurance are outside the workshop price. Use BirdWatch to discuss your camera equipment, suitability and departure arrangements.
