3-Day Minnesota Loon Photography Workshop
A small-group 3-day Common Loon bird photography workshop in Minnesota, with pontoon-boat sessions and instruction from Stan Tekiela.
About this tour
Take time to develop a loon photography portfolio during three days on Minnesota waters with naturalist Stan Tekiela. This workshop brings together no more than four photographers for five pontoon-boat sessions. The longer format provides repeated opportunities to revisit camera technique and respond to changing light, rather than relying on a single encounter.
Sessions generally occupy the morning and evening, with a break around midday and adjustments for weather. A boat session lasts approximately three to three-and-a-half hours. Common Loons are the focus: feeding, preening, takeoff and landing may create subjects, while June can also provide views of adults with young. None of these behaviors or sightings is guaranteed.
Photographers can work seated or close to the boat floor. Chairs, pads and beanbags are provided, and a camera float offers an additional low-level technique. Stan supplies practical guidance on settings, framing and separating a subject from its background. Guests need to manage their own camera gear and be comfortable working aboard a boat; a gimbal may help support a longer lens.
The June 7–9, 2027 departure costs USD 2,450 per person. A nonrefundable USD 1,200 deposit reserves participation, and an optional single-room supplement is USD 600. The nonrefundable balance falls due 60 days in advance. Plan to arrive after 3 pm on June 6. The non-smoking workshop excludes your journey to Minnesota, flight and baggage costs, gratuities and travel insurance. Contact BirdWatch to arrange participation.
