Four-day Iguazu Falls and Misiones Forest Birding

The waterfalls give this four-day trip its setting, but the surrounding Atlantic Forest provides much of the birding. The stay is on the Argentine side, with two full days for trails around Iguazú National Park and a visit to the different forest of nearby Urugua-í. Arrival and departure use Foz do Iguaçu Airport in Brazil, so the route includes an international border crossing.

At the falls, walkways lead to viewpoints and to the Devil’s Throat. Great Dusky Swifts may pass above the water in large numbers, and Black-collared Swallow is a scarcer possibility. Away from the cascades, forest walks offer a chance to search for Solitary Tinamou, Black-fronted Piping Guan, Surucua Trogon and Red-ruffed Fruitcrow. Helmeted Woodpecker is one of the less readily found birds on the area’s list; toucans, manakins and antbirds add other possibilities.

Urugua-í lies a little over an hour by road from Iguazú National Park. Its hilly forest changes the search, with Planalto Tapaculo, Olive Spinetail, Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper and Green-chinned Euphonia among the possibilities. These outings explore part of the Interior Atlantic Forest in Misiones, where connected reserves form the Green Corridor. The habitat supports a broad wildlife community, though no particular bird or mammal sighting can be promised.

A guide meets the arrival flight and accompanies the transfer to the accommodation. If the arrival time permits, the first evening allows relaxed birding near the hotel or falls. After the two main forest days, the final morning leaves a short local birding window before crossing to the Brazilian side of the waterfalls and continuing to the airport. Time for lunch depends on the flight schedule. The trip combines sustained forest birding with opportunities to photograph the cascades.
