About this tour

This full-day outing explores the outer Absheron Peninsula, where shallow bays, lagoons, shoreline and low scrub create varied coastal birding habitat. Absheron National Park can hold waterfowl, waders, gulls and terns, while migration periods bring additional passerines and birds of prey to this exposed point beside the Caspian Sea.

The route uses several observation areas around the park, including the service building and nearby pier, before a short walk toward Shah Dili at the eastern end of the peninsula. Possible birds include Pallas’s Gull, Gull-billed, Whiskered, Common and Sandwich Terns, Purple Heron, Terek Sandpiper and Turkestan Short-toed Lark. Common and Long-legged Buzzards, Honey Buzzard, kites and harriers may pass during migration. A Caspian Seal resting on the coast is an occasional wildlife possibility rather than an expected sighting.

After lunch at a local restaurant, the afternoon continues at Kurdakhani Lake. In winter, this wetland is particularly relevant for White-headed Duck and other waterbirds. The tour returns to Baku by late afternoon.

Depart in the morning, pause briefly for snacks and enter Absheron National Park for coastal birding from several observation points. Visit the service-building area and pier, then make a short walk toward Shah Dili at the peninsula’s eastern tip. After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to Kurdakhani Lake, where White-headed Duck and other wetland birds are possible in winter. Return to Baku by late afternoon.
