American Three-toed Woodpecker

Picoides dorsalis

The American Three-toed Woodpecker is a small to medium-sized woodpecker found in North America. It is easily recognized by its black and white plumage, with a yellow crown on males. This species is known for its unique foraging behavior, often peeling bark from trees to access insect larvae. It prefers coniferous forests, especially those affected by disturbances such as fire or insect outbreaks. The American Three-toed Woodpecker is a skilled climber, using its specialized toe arrangement to move vertically on tree trunks. While not currently considered threatened, it may face habitat loss due to forestry practices and climate change.
