Aplomado Falcon, Falco femoralis, breeds widely across Middle America and South America. It is a falcon in the family Falconidae, first described by Temminck in 1822. Its strongest continuous presence is in South America, though not in the deep interior of the Amazon Basin. The bird is noted for its likeness in shape to the hobbies, which led to the former name orange-chested hobby. The name aplomado comes from a Spanish word meaning lead-coloured, a reference to the blue-grey parts of its plumage.
