Beautiful Woodpecker, Melanerpes pulcher, is a woodpecker of north-central Colombia, where it is found in the Magdalena River valley. It was described by Sclater, PL, 1870. Its range is restricted to Colombia, and it is a resident bird throughout the year. It lives mainly in mature open forest, both dry and moist, and also turns up in plantations, as well as in broken and secondary woodland. It occurs from 400 to 1,500 m. The species is monotypic, and the sexes differ in head pattern.
